Current COVID-19 measures and policies in Japan
The government of Japan is currently implementing “border measures” against Covid-19 for those who are entering Japan.
Before you enter Japan…
1) Have an “Entry Visa” ready.
All non-Japanese citizens must have an entry visa beforehand. For details, please see the following page on our website:
2) Take an “Inspection for Covid-19” (within 72 hours of departure).
All entrants into Japan, whether you are Japanese or non-Japanese, must submit a inspection certificate at the immigration gate on your arrival. The inspection must be done within 72 hours of your departure flight to Japan. For further information about inspections, please see the PDF file below:
3) Make sure that you have “Travel Insurance.”
Some foreign residents may not be applied to Japanese public medical insurances, so we recommend that you take out a travel insurance to cover all the medical expenses during your stay in Japan.
4) Prepare a mobile device (phone, tablet PC, etc.).
On your arrival in Japan, you will be required to install some apps into your mobile device. If you do not have one, they will tell you to rent one at the quarantine station, and you will have to pay for the rent. Even if you do not want to install any apps into your own device, it will be better that you rent a mobile device before you come to Japan, for example, at your departure airport.
After you enter Japan…
1) Install apps into your mobile device.
On your arrival in Japan, you will be required to install the following apps into your mobile device.
2) Sign the pledge and fill in a questionnaire.
At the Quarantine Station, you will be asked to sign a pledge to follow the rules about your behavior during your stay in Japan, and fill in a questionnaire.
3) A “3-day Quarantine” may be required.
Depending on whether you have been vaccinated against Covid-19 three times, or which country/region you are from, you will be required to quarantine yourself in a hotel for three days.
*Designated countries and regions regarding 3-day quarantine (as of May 16, 2022):
Bulgaria, Egypt, Laos, Pakistan, Russia, and South Africa
(Republic of Korea was removed on May 16, 2022.)
Please see the following table to see whether you will be required for a 3-day quarantine or not.
|From any of the designated countries/regions?||Booster Certificate?||Quarantine Place||Quarantine Period (a Covid-19 test required on the third day)|
|YES||NO||Designated hotel prepared by the quarantine office. (Room rates will be paid by the Japanese government.)||“3 days” with “negative” test result on the third day.|

4) Health condition reports will be required during quarantine.
While you are under quarantine, you will be asked to send a health report every day to the Health Monitoring Center (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare) through the “MySOS” app. After your quarantine period is over, or if you are not asked to quarantine yourself in Japan, you will not be required for the health report.
